Due to recent disturbances in Sri Lanka which somewhat hampered our construction work has resumed its journey.

Chaithya Phase 4

Thanks to the kindness of a generous donor we were able to fund the rescue of a pregnant cow from slaughter, and in turn gift her to the villagers.  From this selfless act, not only were we able to save two lives, but also support the livelihoods of the people who in turn would benefit from the milk provided. We were overjoyed to hear that on the 11^th August 2018, a beautiful healthy calf was born, whom due to the wishes of the donor was fondly named ‘Bettie’.

We are pleased to announce that ground preparation work due to start in the next coming weeks to lay the foundation for the Chaithya construction.

With your generous donations, we have received funds and materials worth 40% of the overall construction.

FROM MUD HOUSE TO TEMPLE….

The Journey Begins

In 2015, Project Kantale Maha Viahraya started off from a little mud house with the determination of a Buddhist monk – Ven. Somananda who had a vision of bringing peace and harmony among the local communities, restoring Buddhism and provide support to  a remote part of war ravaged eastern Sri Lanka.

The temple is situated in the 9th Mile post off Kantale – Seruwila road. Not only did Ven. Somananda decided to build a hut and resides there, the Ven. Thero decided to help out the seventeen poor families in the surrounding area. The villagers are so poor that they were unable to offer Dhana to the monk, however they understood the importance of this noble task and offered their free labor to help build the temple. As result we were able to complete many construction task with minimal cost. The Ven. Thero continued his mission and funded the project from the little salary he earns as a teacher of the Pirivena. Handful of individuals and families from Sri Lanka, England and USA started providing support to the project to help Somananda Thero to achieve the following:

This support page is established and maintained by group of people who have helped to achieve the above mentioned noble tasks by providing funds and spending time on organizing various activities such as obtaining estimates for the ongoing construction, planning the Chaithya construction etc.

With the support thus far, we have been able to work towards some of our goals. However, we still have a long way to go and any support we are able to get towards Project Kantale Maha Viahraya would be greatly appreciated.
